Polymarket demo account: there isn't one

The answer is no, and it is no on both versions of Polymarket. The US app that opened to everyone in May 2026 trades real dollars from the first tap, and the offshore crypto site trades real USDC. We checked the live site on July 24, 2026 to be sure. Here is why no demo exists and the four closest free substitutes.

The short answer

No. There is no Polymarket demo account, no demo mode, and no practice balance on either version of the platform. The US app that opened on May 12, 2026 trades real dollars on a CFTC-regulated exchange, and the offshore site trades real USDC. The closest free substitutes are browsing the app without funding it, browser simulators, Kalshi's separate official demo, and PaperPicks, a free iPhone app with a $100 paper bankroll at live odds and no signup.

Does Polymarket have a demo account?#

There is no Polymarket demo account: no practice balance, no test mode, no play-money version of the platform, and the 2026 US relaunch did not quietly add one. The no covers both Polymarkets, because there are two of them now. The US app, open to anyone 18 or older since the waitlist ended on May 12, 2026, trades real dollars on QCEX, the CFTC-registered exchange Polymarket bought for $112 million in July 2025, and funding is ACH or debit card with no crypto step. The offshore site most people picture still runs on USDC on the Polygon blockchain and stays geo-blocked for US residents under Polymarket's 2022 settlement with the CFTC.

We checked rather than assumed. On July 24, 2026 we opened polymarket.com from a US connection, and the site's first move was a modal pushing the iOS app, QR code and a $20 promo code (POLY20) included. Onboarding offers no demo toggle and no practice option of any kind. The docs read the same way: Polymarket 101 describes real collateral and live order books, and a practice environment appears nowhere in it.

polymarket.com on July 24, 2026: US visitors get a QR modal pointing at the iOS app and a $20 promo code. Nothing in onboarding is a demo mode.

So the practical meaning of "no demo" is blunt. The first trade you ever place on Polymarket costs real money, on day one, at whatever skill level you happen to have that day.

Why there is no Polymarket demo mode#

Polymarket is an exchange, not a house, and that is most of the explanation. Every price on the platform is made by traders risking money against each other, so a demo has nothing real to plug into. Fake-money orders cannot rest in the live book without distorting it, which leaves a separate simulated book, and simulated books teach prices that never printed anywhere. Kalshi runs exactly that kind of demo at a different venue and is upfront that its demo prices may not match real markets. The other half of a demo, seeing how the product works, Polymarket already gives away free to anyone who browses. And the relaunch shipped with a $20 signup promo instead of a practice mode, which is a fair signal of where the company wants a curious newcomer to go: funded, not practicing. Nothing in the docs or the app hints at a demo coming, either. If that changes, this page changes.

The closest things to a Polymarket demo#

A Polymarket practice account would have two halves, looking and trading. It does not exist, but each of the four free substitutes below gets you one half or both.

Browsing the real app without funding it. Free, and closer to a demo than people expect. Install the US app or open the site and most of the product works without a deposit: live prices, price history, resolution rules. Watch one market through a news cycle and you will learn a lot about how event prices move. What browsing cannot give you is a position, and positions are where the actual lessons live.

Browser paper-trading sites. A few Polymarket simulator sites exist, and as a category they are a legitimate first taste: mock trades against Polymarket-style prices in a desktop tab. Their common weakness is that nothing sticks. Most keep no permanent record, live on desktop rather than your phone, and have nobody watching, and practice with no consequences tends to turn into clicking.

Kalshi's official demo. The one real demo account in prediction markets belongs to a different exchange. Kalshi's lives at demo.kalshi.co with mock funds and a full copy of the interface, and Kalshi is honest about the limit: the order books are simulated, so demo prices may not behave like real ones. It teaches exchange mechanics well and Polymarket instincts not at all. Setup and fine print are in our Kalshi demo account guide.

PaperPicks. Ours, so weigh accordingly, but this is the search it was built for. PaperPicks is a free iPhone app with a $100 paper bankroll and live prediction-market odds. There is no signup and no KYC, the record is permanent with no reset button, and positions settle when the real markets resolve, so a month of results means something. One disclosure: prices mirror Kalshi-sourced event contracts, not Polymarket's own book. The flagship markets overlap heavily across the two exchanges, and the instrument is identical, a binary contract that pays $1 when you are right and $0 when you are wrong. Money in PaperPicks is never real, and nothing can be deposited, won, or cashed out. Get it on the App Store.

If you only want to see the interface, browse the real app, it costs nothing. If you want reps that stick, PaperPicks is the tool, and our Polymarket paper trading guide is the full practice plan built on it: what transfers to real trading, what does not, and when a paper record says you are ready to fund an account. The Kalshi demo earns its keep mainly when you are testing code against an exchange API rather than testing yourself.

FAQ

Polymarket demo account questions

Does Polymarket have a demo account?
No. Polymarket has never offered a demo account, and the May 2026 US relaunch did not add one. The US app trades real dollars on a CFTC-registered exchange, the offshore site trades real USDC on Polygon, and neither has a practice mode. The free alternatives are all third party: browsing without funding an account, browser simulators, Kalshi's separate demo, or a paper trading app like PaperPicks.
Does Polymarket have practice money?
No. There is no practice balance or play money on either version. Every position on the US app is real dollars and every position on the offshore site is real USDC. The signup promo advertised on the US app is an incentive to fund a real account, not a practice bankroll.
Is there a Polymarket testnet for developers?
Not one that works as a practice account. Polymarket's public documentation describes trading with real collateral and does not document a consumer test mode or sandbox where you can place mock trades. Whatever internal testing tools the company uses, there is no Polymarket test mode a regular user can open, so free practice means a third-party simulator.
How do I try Polymarket without money?
Browse first. The site and the US app show live markets, prices, and resolution rules without a deposit, and that costs nothing. When you want to actually place trades, use paper money somewhere else. PaperPicks gives you a $100 paper bankroll at live prediction-market odds on iPhone with no signup, so the same YES or NO decisions cost nothing while you learn.
Is Polymarket available in the US?
Yes. The waitlist ended on May 12, 2026, and signup is open to US residents 18 and older, iOS app first. The US product runs on QCEX, the CFTC-registered exchange Polymarket bought for $112 million in July 2025, and accounts fund with ACH or debit card, with no crypto involved. The offshore USDC site remains geo-blocked for US users under the 2022 CFTC settlement.
